Aliens: Fireteam Elite is no longer playable on Nintendo Switch after its cloud servers shut down on August 5, leaving people who purchased the Switch version without a way to access it.
Cold Iron Studios originally released the cooperative action game for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, Xbox One, and PC in August 2021. The Switch edition followed in April 2023, but it was offered through cloud streaming instead of a native installation because the hardware was not considered powerful enough to run the game locally.
Players paid $29.99 for the standard edition, while the $59.99 Ultimate Edition included the base game and its DLC. The Switch release was later removed from the eShop, and players received a notice that its cloud service would close on August 5, according to AVP Galaxy’s coverage of the shutdown notice.
With the servers now offline, the Switch version has no local fallback. The game remains available through digital stores on other platforms, where it can still be played offline even if it is eventually delisted. Switch owners, however, cannot do the same because the entire release depended on remote streaming.
Cloud-only games face a preservation problem
The shutdown shows the risk attached to cloud-only releases. Streaming can bring games to hardware that cannot run them natively, but access ends if the service hosting the game disappears. Without a downloadable version or an offline mode, a purchased game can become inaccessible rather than simply unavailable for new buyers.
Cloud streaming is also part of services such as Xbox Game Pass and PlayStation Plus, while Amazon Luna and Netflix have hosted games that could only be played through the cloud. Those releases face the same basic issue: once the servers close, players may have no preserved copy to return to.
Aliens: Fireteam Elite is now a particularly clear example because the game still exists elsewhere, yet its Switch version has effectively vanished for the people who bought it.
