Diablo 4’s Returning Arioc’s Needle Could Give Damage Over Time Builds a New Way to Scale
The Diablo 2 spear will return as a polearm in Season 15, but its Deadly Strike behavior remains untested on the PTR.

Diablo 4’s Season 15 PTR is giving players an early look at the next season’s content, including Challenge Dungeons, balance changes, and the new Soul Splinters jewelry system. It will also bring back several items from earlier Diablo games.
Among them is Arioc’s Needle, a spear from Diablo 2 that returns in Diablo 4 as a polearm. The item is drawing attention because it introduces Deadly Strike to the game for the first time.
Deadly Strike could open a new path for DoT builds
In Diablo 2, Deadly Strike gives melee attacks a chance to deal double damage. Its behavior in Diablo 4 has not been properly tested yet, and the relevant tooltip is missing from the current PTR. That leaves the item’s final impact unclear, but the possible interaction with damage-over-time builds is already getting attention.
Damage-over-time abilities do not benefit from Critical Strikes in Diablo 4. Builds centered on those skills are consequently missing one of the major damage multipliers available to other setups. If Deadly Strike works independently of Critical Strike, it could give DoT builds another way to scale their damage.
Arioc’s Needle also carries an affix that grants a Lucky Hit chance to deal Poisoning damage. That does not confirm a specific intended build, but it gives the polearm another connection to damage-over-time effects and poison-focused setups.
The PTR is still being tested, with known problems affecting Warlock progression and several Unique items, as outlined in these Season 15 PTR bug reports. Deadly Strike may receive further tuning before Season 15 arrives, so Arioc’s Needle’s role in the item meta is not settled.
Only three classes can use the polearm for now
Polearms are currently available to Druids, Barbarians, and Spiritborn. That limits which characters can test Arioc’s Needle during the PTR, even if the Deadly Strike effect proves useful for DoT builds.
If the mechanic performs as players hope, it could eventually become available to more classes. For now, the returning Diablo 2 item remains a promising possibility rather than a confirmed answer for damage-over-time builds.
Arioc’s Needle’s future could depend on how Deadly Strike behaves once Season 15 moves beyond testing. Share your thoughts in the comments, and follow us on X, Bluesky, YouTube, Instagram, Steam, and Telegram.
