WoW Patch 12.1 Will Raise Mythic Raid Rewards to 9/6 and Add Vault Rolls
The Great Vault will offer raid gear one tier above direct boss loot, while bonus rolls will become available during the second week of Season 2.

World of Warcraft Patch 12.1, Curse of Ula’tek, will give Mythic raiders stronger rewards and add bonus rolls to the Great Vault. Blizzard Associate Game Director Paul Kubit and Lead Quest Designer Rachel Vought discussed the upcoming changes, Season 2 content, and the next part of Midnight’s story in a group interview.
The conversation also covered the delayed release of Arator’s hunt, fast travel to the Coiled Isle, the move from world bosses to lairs, housing blueprints, and some of the secrets waiting inside the Vaults of Atal’Utek. A Wowhead transcript of the interview provides another record of the discussion.
Patch 12.1 will give Mythic raiders 9/6 items
Blizzard said the final two raid bosses in Patch 12.1 will offer 9/6 Myth items. Kubit explained that Mythic raiders are taking on some of the hardest content in the game, so the reward needs to reflect that level of difficulty.
The Great Vault will also change how raid rewards are presented. Completing a Normal raid boss will place Hero gear in the corresponding raid row, while completing a Heroic raid boss will provide Myth gear through the Vault. In both cases, the Vault reward will sit one tier above the direct boss drop.
That system is meant to give Normal and Heroic raiders a stronger upgrade path while leaving Mythic raiders with a reason to push through the final encounters. Blizzard will continue watching player feedback after Patch 12.1 arrives.
Great Vault bonus rolls will arrive in Season 2’s second week
Bonus rolls will become available from the Great Vault during the second week of Season 2. They are designed to give players another decision when the Vault does not contain the item they want, rather than forcing them to accept one of the available choices.
Players will be able to take an item from the Vault immediately or use a bonus roll later at a preferred delve, dungeon, or raid boss. The latter option keeps the reward tied to the encounter itself, while the first option lets players claim a power increase right away.
Blizzard is aware that players may feel frustrated if they select an item from the Vault and then see the same item appear from a bonus roll. Kubit confirmed that Patch 12.1 will not remove a selected Vault item from the bonus-roll table, though the team is listening to feedback about that possibility for a later season.
Arator’s hunt will continue after the Season 2 launch
Arator’s hunt storyline will not be playable at the start of Patch 12.1. The chapter was available early on the Public Test Realm for testing, but it will open after Season 2 begins and after the Venomous Abyss raid becomes available.
The main campaign continues first through Zul’jan’s story and the Coiled Isle. Players will also get a faster route to the island through the returning Prey system. Astalor Bloodsworn will offer new targets, torments, voice lines, and rewards, including a quick-travel option to the Coiled Isle.
Blizzard also plans to share another class-tuning roadmap. The team has target windows for its tuning passes, but those dates will not prevent further changes if balance issues require attention.
Lairs will replace the current world-boss format
Patch 12.1 will move away from the current world-boss structure and introduce lairs. These encounters will take place inside caves, caverns, and other spaces claimed by the boss, giving Blizzard more room to offer several difficulty levels.
The World difficulty will work much like a modern open-world boss. Players can enter, meet others at the entrance, form a group naturally, and begin the encounter when they are ready. Normal and Heroic difficulties will follow, along with a flexible Mythic option for players who want a harder fight.
Nymrissa, the new lair and world boss, should feel similar to a regular boss from the Venomous Abyss at the matching difficulty. Kubit said players should not expect Ulitech-level difficulty, with an early Venomous Abyss boss serving as a closer comparison.
The Coiled Isle mixes open-air travel with underground movement
The outdoor section of the Coiled Isle will be fully flyable, while the underground Vaults of Atal’Utek will restrict players to ground mounts. Movement inside the temple will still include plenty of vertical travel through airstreams, feathers, interactable objects, and other hidden routes.
The map will help players find activity already happening underground, allowing them to join nearby fights more quickly. Other movement shortcuts may take time to discover. Blizzard expects players to learn more efficient routes as they spend more time inside the Vaults and find ways around groups of enemies.
The Corrosive Codex will provide another progression system for players who want to spend more time in the open-world content. It is meant to remain optional. Players can earn corrosive coins, spend them on cosmetics or Codex nodes, improve their ability to find more coins, identify certain enemies with a purple glow, and reduce damage from the toxic river.
More story details, housing features, and hidden creatures
Rachel Vought said Blizzard was pleased with the response to Zul’jan and Zul’jarra. Patch 12.1 will continue developing the Amani characters, showing different sides of their culture rather than presenting the group as a single kind of faction. The team also plans to add personal stories throughout the Coiled Isle, including small local tales and new creatures.
Players can look for a baby snake with a mohawk and baby wind serpents. A raccoon-shaped creature may also be hiding somewhere in the update, with Jimothy expected to remain a secret or at least somewhat difficult to find.
Housing will receive pets and blueprints in Patch 12.1. Blueprints will let players save and share room or house designs, then apply them if they own the required decor and dyes. Blizzard has not ruled out practical housing features in the future, including ideas such as training dummies, vendors, raid portals, or neighborhood threats.
There is still no announcement of a raid-exclusive mount tied to a top percentage of players. Blizzard already has Mythic raid mounts that can drop from final bosses, but creating a ranking-based reward for raids would require a system for measuring raid performance.
Patch 12.1 will bring together new raid rewards, Great Vault decisions, a delayed story chapter, and a different approach to world bosses. Share your thoughts on the upcoming changes in the comments, and follow us on X, Bluesky, YouTube, Instagram, Steam, and Telegram.
