PUBG’s First Meta Rotation Will Put LMGs Front and Center This August

PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS is planning to start its first Meta Rotation in August 2026, with light machine guns taking the featured spot. The new system will change which weapon classes shape combat roughly every four months instead of allowing the same options to dominate for long stretches.

In its official Dev Letter, PUBG explained that Meta Rotation is meant to give each cycle its own gunplay identity. The team first announced the initiative through the 2026 Roadmap in March, and the letter did not provide a specific day for the August start.

LMGs will lead PUBG’s first Meta Rotation

LMGs were chosen because they can change how fights unfold beyond a simple damage increase. Their large magazines and sustained fire can support suppression, vehicle counterplay, and loadouts that share ammunition with DMRs and SRs. Their long reloads and difficult recoil patterns, however, have kept them outside the most common weapon choices.

A usage breakdown included with the Dev Letter puts ARs at 51.5 percent, SRs at 15.4 percent, SMGs at 12.7 percent, DMRs at 12.2 percent, LMGs at 4.6 percent, and other weapons at 3.6 percent. The first rotation is designed to give the least-used major weapon class a much larger role.

The LMG changes focus on reloads and recoil

The planned balance pass will reduce the base reload time of every LMG by approximately 25 percent. That brings the average down from around eight seconds to about five seconds. ARs and SMGs typically reload in roughly 3.4 seconds, so LMGs will still take longer to ready, but the gap will be much smaller.

Recoil will also receive a careful adjustment. The peak of an LMG’s vertical recoil during sustained fire will decrease by about 10 percent, while recoil after the recovery point will increase by 10 percent. Horizontal recoil will be reduced by up to 30 percent, which should make long bursts less erratic without removing the weapon class’s harder-hitting handling style.

That combination should make LMGs easier to use without turning them into ordinary assault rifles. Players will still need to plan around their reload windows, but holding a lane with sustained fire will carry less of a control penalty.

RPD will join the M249 and MG3

The first Meta Rotation will also introduce the RPD, PUBG’s first new LMG in nearly two years. The 7.62mm weapon will join the M249 as one of the main choices for the LMG-focused cycle.

RPD carries 50 rounds by default and can reach 110 rounds with an extended magazine. It offers 43 damage per shot, 750 RPM, a 735 m/s muzzle velocity, and a 5.2-second base reload time. The M249 trades some damage and reload speed for a higher rate of fire and faster bullets.

MG3 will also receive the first rotation’s LMG improvements. PUBG says the goal is to give each weapon a clear strength rather than create one mandatory pick. RPD will lean into per-shot power and steadier handling, while M249 will remain the faster-firing option.

Update 44.2 will begin the second cycle in December

Meta Rotation will continue in cycles of approximately four months. During each one, the featured weapon or weapon class will receive larger balance changes than usual. When the cycle ends, those adjustments will return to a standard level and another weapon will take the spotlight.

PUBG says it will track gameplay data throughout each rotation and make further balance changes when needed. The second Meta Rotation is scheduled to begin with Update 44.2 in December 2026, although the team has not yet revealed which weapon will be featured next.
