Nintendo Switch 2 sales have reached 23.68 million units, according to Nintendo’s financial report for the first quarter of FY27. The console launched in June 2025 and sold 3.82 million units during the latest quarter.
Nintendo published its August 6 financial report with updated hardware, software, and player figures. The company said Switch 2 adoption remained favorable compared with the original Switch at a similar point in its lifecycle.
Switch 2 sales fell from last year’s launch-boosted quarter
Quarterly Switch 2 sales were down 34.4% year over year. That comparison includes the same period in 2025, when the system had just launched and benefited from the first wave of demand surrounding its release.
Nintendo said new first-party software continued to support hardware sales as the console entered its second year. The company also pointed to price revisions introduced in Japan on May 25, saying hardware sell-through remained solid after the changes.
Switch 2 is ahead of Nintendo’s previous systems
After five fiscal quarters, Switch 2 had sold more units than Nintendo’s previous systems at the same point. The Wii had reached 20.13 million units by the end of its fifth fiscal quarter, while the original Switch had reached 17.79 million.
By the end of June, Switch 2 sales had reached 6.7 million in Japan, 7.95 million in the Americas, 5.37 million in Europe, and 3.66 million across other regions.
Switch 2 has passed the GameCube
After one year and 25 days on the market, Switch 2 had moved 1.94 million units beyond the GameCube’s final lifetime total of 21.74 million. The GameCube reached that figure over five years, giving Switch 2 another major hardware milestone during its first year.
The GameCube still has a substantial lead in software sales, however. Its games sold 208.58 million units across the system’s lifespan, compared with 58.17 million games sold for Switch 2 so far. Those figures cover different periods, so Switch 2’s hardware milestone has not been matched by its software catalog.
Nintendo 64 is Switch 2’s next hardware target
The Nintendo 64 is the next system in Nintendo’s hardware sales ranking. Switch 2 needs another 9.25 million units to match its lifetime total.
Nintendo is forecasting another 12.68 million Switch 2 sales across the next three quarters. If that target is met, the console would reach 36.35 million lifetime sales during the company’s financial year.
Nintendo still counts around 130 million annual playing users
Nintendo’s annual playing-user figure remained around 130 million for the period from June 2025 through June 2026. That number gives the company a broad audience beyond the 23.68 million Switch 2 owners recorded since launch.
The original Switch is closing in on the PS2 record
The original Switch sold 660,000 units during the same quarter, bringing its lifetime total to 156.59 million. Nintendo expects to sell another 1.34 million before the end of its financial year, which would lift the system to 157.93 million sales.
That would leave the original Switch only a few million units behind Sony’s reported PlayStation 2 record of 160.63 million consoles sold.
Nintendo also reported software milestones in the results. Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream had sold more than 8 million units as of August 5, while Pokémon Pokopia had reached 3.68 million units by the end of June.
With sales continuing at a strong pace and first-party releases supporting demand, Nintendo enters the rest of FY27 with the Switch 2 already ahead of the original console’s comparable sales position.
