Roblox Looks to Older Players After a 72% Value Drop

Executives blamed weaker spending on an algorithm change that favors games built for repeat play over short-lived viral hits.

Roblox is looking beyond the viral games that powered spending in 2025 after its latest financial results showed monetization falling below expectations. The company’s stock has dropped 72% from last year, a decline also detailed in Dexerto’s report on Roblox’s lost value.

During a Q&A with investors, CEO David Baszucki and CFO Naveen K. Chopra explained the results through the company’s quarterly results materials. Chopra said engagement hours were “in line with our expectations,” but monetization came in “below our forecast.”

Roblox attributed the shortfall to where players are spending their time. Engagement moved away from highly monetized viral games released in 2025 and toward newer, longer-lasting experiences that currently earn less money per hour. The company’s recommendation algorithm now favors games that keep players coming back, even when they produce less immediate revenue.

Chopra also said younger users were less motivated to spend during the quarter. That matters because Roblox has 123 million daily active users, and the company says most of them are under 17. Roblox has built an enormous audience of children and teenagers, but that same audience is now part of the reason the platform is searching for new sources of spending.

Roblox wants games that last longer

Baszucki said the company wants to move further toward “evergreen” games that hold players for long periods. The idea is to rely less on short-lived experiences designed to attract a quick burst of attention and spending. He described this approach as the opposite of the “clickbait-y” or “cash grabby-type games” that can become popular for a brief time.

Baszucki pointed to games such as Dress to Impress and Steal a Brainrot as examples of the kind of briefly viral experiences that helped define Roblox’s recent activity. The company’s new direction does not mean those games are disappearing, but it does show that Roblox wants more titles with staying power across its catalog.

The other part of the plan is reaching players aged 18 and over. Baszucki told investors that this audience represents 80% of the global gaming market, which he valued at $200 billion. He believes Roblox can grow among adult players while continuing to serve its younger audience.

Baszucki also argued that younger players are changing as they grow up and repeated his broader vision of Roblox as a place where everyone can create and build. That would give the platform a path to retain users as they move beyond its traditional under-18 audience instead of relying on parents to fund short-term purchases.

Roblox did not provide a clear prediction for how the rest of its 2026 financial year will look. Chopra pointed to the number of factors still in motion, although he said the company felt good about its long-term direction. For now, Roblox is asking investors to accept lower short-term monetization while it tries to build a catalog that can keep players engaged for years.

The plan could change what becomes popular on Roblox, but the financial pressure is already clear. Share your thoughts in the comments, and follow us on X, Bluesky, YouTube, and Instagram.
