Marvel Rivals will receive its Season 9.5 update on August 7, 2026, with a texture-compression overhaul aimed at reducing the game’s storage requirements. NetEase says the PC version will become roughly 40 GB smaller, while the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions will shrink by about 15 GB.
Why the first download will be larger
The smaller final install size comes from repackaging the game’s texture assets. NetEase says the compression process will not reduce the visual detail on screen, but players should prepare for an unusually large initial download when Season 9.5 arrives.
After that installation finishes, the updated files should leave considerably more free space on the affected platforms. The PlayStation Store currently lists the PS5 version at roughly 73 GB, so the planned 15 GB reduction represents about 20 percent of its present install footprint. The developer has not provided new total install-size figures, so the confirmed changes are the approximate reductions rather than a final storage requirement.
Creative director Guangguang explained the change during the Season 9.5 presentation, Dev Vision Vol. 20. The studio’s broader point was that the game’s growing seasonal content has pushed its file size higher, and the new asset packaging is meant to address that pressure without sacrificing visual fidelity.
Switch 2 players may also benefit from the work later on. Marvel Games confirmed a Switch 2 version of Marvel Rivals in March, but a release date has not been announced.
