Baldur’s Gate 3 stats reveal 9,122 players chose some truly strange screen ratios

Larian Studios also reported 500 million mod downloads, 13,000 uploaded mods, and more non-Dark Urge players killing Alfira than Dark Urge players.

Baldur’s Gate 3 reached its third anniversary, and Larian Studios marked the occasion with a fresh batch of player statistics. The numbers cover mod downloads, NPC deaths, and display setups that make the game’s already-chaotic community look even more chaotic.

Larian reported more than 500 million mod downloads, along with 13,000 different mods uploaded across all platforms. That is a huge amount of community content for one RPG, but the studio’s murder statistics may be even more revealing.

Zevlor and Alfira had a rough time

Zevlor, the tiefling refugee leader from Act 1, was the story NPC who died most often. He was also the second-most-common victim during Dark Urge playthroughs, which says quite a lot about the treatment of one of the game’s most recognizable characters.

Alfira’s numbers were just as strange. More players who were not using the Dark Urge killed her than Dark Urge players did. The origin built around murderous impulses apparently was not the main reason Alfira kept meeting an unfortunate end.

9,122 players used unusual aspect ratios

The strangest figures involved the game’s display ratios. Larian counted 114 players using a 1:1 ratio and another 9,008 players using 9:16. Together, that adds up to 9,122 players who played Baldur’s Gate 3 in resolutions far outside the usual widescreen setup.

A 1:1 display is square, while 9:16 is tall and narrow. The latter is common for portrait-oriented screens, but it is a particularly awkward shape for a party-based RPG filled with menus, dialogue boxes, and sprawling environments. Playing through the whole adventure that way sounds less like a practical setup and more like a challenge issued by someone who had already run out of sensible ways to play.

Larian’s anniversary figures offer a funny snapshot of how players have spent the past three years in Faerûn. Hundreds of millions of mod downloads are one thing. Choosing to experience the entire game on a vertical display is where the community may have crossed into video game mischief.
