Minecraft apples are triggering jet-like explosions thanks to a bizarre mod clash

A Reddit user traced the chaos to SoundBarrier reacting to apples added by Pam's HarvestCraft 2.

A routine Minecraft apple harvest turned into a noisy disaster for one modded Java Edition player. After Saledka picked apples from a tree, explosions began erupting around the fruit with smoke, loud jet-like audio, and a shrill ringing effect.

The apple trees came from the tree module for Pam’s HarvestCraft 2, since they are not part of the standard Minecraft experience. The unexpected reaction appeared when the fruit spawned and fell from the tree, leaving the player searching for an explanation in the feedthebeast subreddit.

The clip had collected more than 2,900 upvotes and 125 comments at the time of reporting. A top reply pointed toward the SoundBarrier mod on CurseForge as the likely cause.

SoundBarrier adds audio and dust effects when something reaches supersonic speeds, with the effect apparently activating at around 70 blocks per second or faster. In this case, the mod seems to have treated falling apples as though they were moving at fighter-jet speed. That is a lot of drama for a piece of fruit.

The original Reddit post shows the explosions beginning as the apples drop from the tree:

With SoundBarrier identified as the suspected culprit, the fix should be fairly simple. Anyone who sees an apple tree producing smoke instead of snacks may want to check their mod list for conflicts between sound effects and custom crops. Minecraft’s mod scene can create wonderfully silly results, much like the physics chaos from another recent Minecraft mod.

Minecraft

Minecraft focuses on allowing the player to explore, interact with, and modify a dynamically-generated map made of one-cubic-meter-sized blocks. In addition to blocks, the environment features plants, mobs, and items. Some activities in the game include mining for ore, fighting hostile mobs, and crafting new blocks and tools by gathering various resources found in the game. The game's open-ended model allows players to create structures, creations, and artwork on various multiplayer servers or their single-player maps. Other features include redstone circuits for logic computations and remote actions, minecarts and tracks, and a mysterious underworld called the Nether. A designated but completely optional goal of the game is to travel to a dimension called the End, and defeat the ender dragon.
