Apex Legends’ Original Titanfall Art Director Is Back at Respawn

Ryan Lastimosa left Respawn in early 2023 and has returned as the franchise art director for Apex Legends.

Ryan Lastimosa is returning to Respawn Entertainment as Franchise Art Director, bringing one of the original creative voices behind Titanfall back to work on Apex Legends. Lastimosa left the studio in early 2023 after more than a decade with the developer.

Lastimosa confirmed the move in a July 31, 2026 post, saying he was proud to return to Respawn and work on a franchise that holds a special place in his heart. He also signed off with a message for players: “See you on the Frontier, Legends!”

A familiar creative voice returns

Lastimosa joined Respawn during the studio’s early days as a senior 3D artist. His work helped establish the visual identity of Titanfall, and he later became Creative Director. He also directed the 3D art for Apex Legends and other single-player projects that were in development at Respawn.

That history gives Lastimosa a direct connection to the look of both series. Apex Legends launched inside the Titanfall universe with a rougher science-fiction style, but its visual direction has become brighter and more colorful across years of events, collaborations, and cosmetic releases.

The contrast is especially clear in the game’s character skins. Early designs for Legends such as Bangalore and Bloodhound leaned closer to the grounded military science-fiction style associated with Titanfall. Later cosmetics, including Wattson releases, have used brighter colors and more stylized armor.

Lastimosa’s appointment does not confirm that Apex Legends will completely return to its launch-era appearance. It does, however, put a familiar Titanfall-era art leader back in a position where he can influence the game’s visual direction as the live service moves through its 30th season.

Respawn’s decision gives Apex players a reason to watch upcoming art, character, and cosmetic reveals closely. Fans who preferred the series’ earlier, more grounded look may see Lastimosa’s return as a promising sign, even if the studio has not announced specific visual changes.
