D&D Star Wars is coming in 2027, and fans fear Edge’s RPG may be over

The surprise Gen Con announcement introduced a new Universes Beyond crossover while raising fresh questions about Star Wars Roleplaying from Edge Studios.

Wizards of the Coast announced D&D Star Wars at Gen Con 2026, with the tabletop crossover planned for 2027. The reveal featured Darth Vader and teased a broader “Season of Rebellion,” pointing toward the original trilogy era.

The project will be the second Universes Beyond crossover for Dungeons & Dragons after D&D World of Warcraft. Details remain limited, but the Star Wars setting gives the tabletop RPG a science-fiction backdrop alongside its usual fantasy foundations.

Wizards has said that D&D Universes Beyond is additive to the game’s existing roadmap, rather than a replacement for its original settings. The company also announced plans to bring back classic worlds and characters including Dragonlance, Greyhawk, Drizzt, and Dark Sun, which is returning in 2027. Dragonlance will be led by original co-creator Tracy Hickman, while Luke Gygax will lead the Greyhawk project.

The announcement received plenty of attention, including more than 30,000 likes on the official Instagram post. The live chat during the D&D presentation also reacted strongly when Vader appeared on stage.

Not everyone welcomed the crossover. Some reactions questioned whether Star Wars fits Dungeons & Dragons, while others worried that the new project could mark the end of Star Wars Roleplaying, the RPG line previously handled by Fantasy Flight Games and Edge Studios.

One commenter in the Star Wars RPG community wrote that the announcement “all but confirms that the FFG/Edge product line is officially dead and buried,” pointing to the history of Star Wars receiving only one ongoing licensed RPG at a time. That reaction appeared in a Reddit discussion, though there has been no confirmation that Edge’s line has been formally canceled.

Edge’s Star Wars Roleplaying line covered three different eras and built a reputation among fans for focusing on corners of the setting beyond the main film heroes. Edge Studios has spent more recent attention on other tabletop properties, including Arkham Horror and Twilight Imperium, which has left Star Wars players with little new material to discuss.

There is already a dedicated Star Wars tabletop role-playing game, while the fan-made SW5e project adapts the D&D 5e rules for the franchise. Those options give players alternatives if they want mechanics built specifically around the Star Wars setting.

D&D Star Wars will have to adapt several parts of the ruleset to fit the setting. Magic is uncommon in the Star Wars universe, so many class abilities and spells may need to be presented as technology, the Force, or other setting-specific tools. Space travel and ship combat will also need rules that fit the galaxy far, far away.

There is still plenty of room for Dungeons & Dragons to make the concept work. Playable species could support a wide range of characters, while subclasses built around scoundrels, pilots, and Force users could give the crossover its own identity. A shared ship and a campaign built around moving between planets would also give parties a clear way to travel through the setting.

The crossover format may also make Star Wars easier to handle in D&D than in Magic: The Gathering, where Universes Beyond cards can appear across much of the game. D&D groups can simply choose whether they want to use a setting book, leaving campaigns in the Forgotten Realms or other worlds untouched.

For now, the main question is whether D&D Star Wars will exist alongside Edge Studios’ RPG or replace it. The 2027 release window leaves time for Wizards of the Coast and Edge to clarify the future of both product lines, but fans are already watching closely.
