Final Fantasy 7 Revelation is scheduled to launch in early 2027, but Square Enix has not decided whether the RPG will receive a traditional disc release. Director Naoki Hamaguchi is pushing for some form of physical edition, though he cannot promise one yet.
That uncertainty comes as the physical games market continues to shift. Insider Gaming reports that Sony has announced plans to stop producing physical discs for PlayStation games in 2028, leaving fans to question how upcoming releases will be distributed.
Hamaguchi discussed the plans in an interview connected to the recent Final Fantasy 14 Fan Festival in Berlin. He said Square Enix is still working through the exact product lineup for Revelation, which means the company has not settled on the formats it will sell.
“We’re still having internal discussions on what the exact SKU product lineup is going to be for Revelation,” Hamaguchi said. “I can’t say anything particularly definitive at this point in time. But I am working to make the arrangements to allow us to have some kind of physical edition.”
The director also acknowledged that the industry is moving toward downloadable releases. Even so, he believes physical products serve a purpose beyond simply installing a game. Fans bringing games to community events for autographs is part of a culture he does not want to see disappear, especially for a series with such a strong connection to its disc-based roots.
“I think it’s a wonderful culture and it would be a shame to lose that,” Hamaguchi said in the interview about Revelation’s physical release plans.
Physical media could take different forms
Hamaguchi does not think packaged games will vanish entirely, even if full game data stops fitting on a standard disc. He pointed to several possible alternatives, including a box containing a download code, a Nintendo-style key card, or a boot disc.
The format would depend on the platform and its technical limits. Storage capacity, first-party requirements, and each platform holder’s rules are all part of Square Enix’s current discussions. The team is trying to find an option that comes as close as possible to what players expect from a physical release.
The previous entries set a high bar for disc buyers. Final Fantasy 7 Remake shipped across multiple discs on PS4, while Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth used multiple discs for its PS5 launch. That approach gave players more than a disc containing only a basic installer, a practice that has become more common for large releases.
For now, Square Enix is keeping the final product lineup under wraps. Hamaguchi also joked that fans would be furious if he publicly supported a physical version and the eventual announcement offered none.
Players will need to wait for a future announcement before they know whether Final Fantasy 7 Revelation will arrive on a full game disc, a different physical format, or only as a digital release.
