Fable may be facing more than another delay. A new report claims Playground Games has taken the upcoming RPG beyond its planned budget, with sources describing the situation as “uncomfortably” over budget.
The game has already moved from its original 2025 release window to 2026, and the report now points to a possible 2027 launch. That would add another year to a project first shown publicly in 2023.
Fable’s Multiplatform Plans Remain in Place
The budget claim comes from a WindowsCentral report examining Xbox’s approach to releasing games across multiple platforms. According to the report, titles already announced for more than one platform are expected to keep those plans. That group includes Fable and Halo.
The report suggests the same flexibility may not apply to future Halo projects, while sources claimed that Fable’s development costs had gone “uncomfortably” beyond budget. No specific budget figure or explanation for the extra spending was provided.
That uncertainty leaves several questions open for Playground Games. A longer development period can add costs, but the report does not explain whether the overspending will affect the game’s scope, launch plans, or availability across platforms.
God of War: Laufey Could Complicate the PS5 Launch
The report also connects Fable’s release timing to God of War: Laufey. Santa Monica Studio’s upcoming game is scheduled to arrive on February 16, one day before Fable’s early-access period begins. If that schedule remains unchanged, PlayStation 5 players may have to choose between the two releases before deciding whether to buy both.
Fable’s multiplatform launch was previously announced for Xbox, PC, and PlayStation. The new budget report does not confirm a platform cancellation or a revised launch plan, so the effect on the PlayStation release remains unclear.
Playground Games is also building Fable around a large open world, player choice, and a population of individually created characters. Those ambitions could help explain why development has taken time, although the report does not connect any specific feature to the alleged budget increase.
Fable was first announced publicly at E3 2020, adding to the length of its development cycle. Push Square also reports that Playground Games reworked its proprietary ForzaTech engine to support an open-world RPG rather than a racing game, including life-simulation elements alongside more traditional role-playing systems. That technical work provides additional context for the project’s extended production, but it does not establish the cause of the reported overspending.
Fable’s reported 2027 timing and budget concerns give the project another difficult chapter before launch. Tell us what you think in the comments, and follow us on X, Bluesky, YouTube, and Instagram.
