Hideo Kojima’s VIVANT Cameo Was Digitally Altered Because He Looked Too Young

The 62-year-old creator appeared as Japan's National Police Agency Commissioner General without his trademark glasses and beard.

Hideo Kojima has made plenty of screen appearances, but his latest cameo may be difficult to spot. The 62-year-old creator appeared in the latest episode of the Japanese crime drama VIVANT as the Commissioner General of the National Police Agency.

Kojima removed his glasses, slicked back his hair, and wore the character’s uniform for the role. The production still decided that his appearance needed digital changes because he looked too young for the senior position. His beard was also considered out of place for the role, given the lack of precedent for facial hair on Japanese authority figures.

A post showing Kojima’s altered appearance prompted a lighthearted reaction online, with the image making him difficult to recognize at first glance.

Kojima later explained that CGI was used after his initial look was judged to be “too young” for the Commissioner General. He also said the production considered his beard unsuitable, even after he had removed his glasses and changed his hairstyle for the part.

Kojima has several games in production

The cameo arrives as Kojima continues work on multiple projects. O.D., which stars Sophia Lillis and Hunter Schafer, remains in development alongside PHYSINT, his espionage project being made for PlayStation. The project has already drawn attention for its cast and its close connection to Kojima’s long-running interest in film and television.

That mix of games and screen work has become a familiar part of Kojima’s career. His cameo in VIVANT adds another unexpected appearance to the list, even if viewers may need to look twice before recognizing him.
