Blizzard Fires WoW GM After Bosses Were Killed for Friends

The company said the Mythic+ cheating incident involved one employee and that complicit player accounts would also face action.

Blizzard fired the World of Warcraft game master who used internal tools to instantly kill two Mythic+ bosses for friends. The company said the incident involved one employee and violated its Code of Conduct.

The case came to light earlier this week after a Reddit user shared combat logs from a Mythic+ dungeon. One boss with nearly full health died instantly to a GM ability, and another player later found evidence of a second boss being killed the same way earlier in the run.

A player involved in the dungeon later admitted during a Twitch stream that they had asked their GM friend for help rather than repeat the run. The player described the boss as having 20 million health and asked the GM to take it down in one hit.

Blizzard says the incident was isolated

A GM would have needed to spectate the run to use the ability on command. That kind of in-game presence is uncommon, since most customer service requests are handled through Blizzard’s website. GMs are more often needed for testing raid encounters on the PTR or supporting world-first raid races.

The unusual access led to concerns that other GM-assisted Mythic+ runs might exist. Blizzard community manager Randy “Kaivax” Jordan addressed those concerns in an official forum post, saying the company had confirmed that the incident came from a single employee.

Blizzard also said it would take action against player accounts that participated in the violation. The company did not specify how many players knew about the GM’s involvement.

According to Blizzard, a limited number of employees can use developer tools and spells on live servers for testing and urgent fixes. Each use is logged and shared with the Platform Security team. Using those tools for anything outside development work violates company policy, and Blizzard said its logging process gave it confidence that this case was isolated.

The Mythic+ run was disqualified

The dungeon run was not a major competitive achievement. The players were trying to complete it for a title, but ranking site Raider.io disqualified the record after the unauthorized boss kills. The run’s details remain available through the Raider.io listing.

Blizzard’s response closes the immediate investigation, but the incident also shows how closely developer access on live realms is monitored when internal tools are used outside their intended purpose.
