Hideo Kojima Wants His Final Moment to Happen in a Movie Theater
The creator said he would prefer to pass away during the quiet moments before a film begins, when the lights have gone down and the trailers are playing.
Hideo Kojima has spent much of his career blending games with the language of film, and he has now shared an unusually personal thought about cinema. The creator said he would like to die inside a movie theater, ideally during the moments just before the feature begins.
Kojima discussed his preferred way to pass away during a recent interview. A translated version of his remarks was shared by Genki_JPN, where he explained that the period before a movie starts is his favorite part of the theater experience.
“I’m someone who’s always thought when I die, I want to die in a movie theater.”
“I like the time before the movie starts the best. Enter the movie theater, the lights turn off, the commercials and trailers play, then just before the movie starts is when I want to pass away.”
That preference fits Kojima’s long-running love of movies. He frequently talks about films and television, and his game projects often borrow from cinematic presentation, pacing, and visual storytelling. Even his upcoming projects continue to blur the line between a traditional game and an interactive film.
One example is OD, the horror project being developed by Kojima Productions. The game is intended to test the limits of the medium and place a strong focus on fear and performance. The project remains one of the clearest examples of Kojima pursuing ideas that sit somewhere between games and movies.
Kojima has also spoken before about what he would leave behind if he were no longer able to work. In that earlier idea, he imagined preserving game concepts so his team could continue developing them. His latest comment takes a quieter approach, with the end of a film serving as the setting for his final moment rather than another game-related plan.
