ArenaNet says Guild Wars 3 won’t push the older games out of the way

The studio said Guild Wars 2 and the original Guild Wars will keep getting updates, and Guild Wars 2 will still see a few smaller changes before Guild Wars 3 arrives.

ArenaNet has made one thing clear: Guild Wars 3 will not come at the expense of the older games. In a video blog published on June 6, 2026, the studio said Guild Wars 2 and the original Guild Wars will keep receiving new updates “for the foreseeable future”.

Colin Johanson, ArenaNet’s head, put the message plainly: “We are not replacing your favorite games. We’ll be supporting them.” He said that approach was already in motion and pointed to the way the first Guild Wars was effectively handed off when Guild Wars 2 took over active development after Eye of the North.

The current plan also leaves room for a few smaller Guild Wars 2 changes before the next game shows up. ArenaNet said an optimization pass, a return of the Hall of Monuments system that lets players earn Guild Wars 3 rewards in Guild Wars 2, and an updated version of the Zhaitan fight are all on the way. After that, Guild Wars 2 will still receive more expansions once Guild Wars 3 is out.

That stance fits with the original game’s recent momentum, too, since ArenaNet has started adding new dungeons to the first Guild Wars after years of quiet.

It is a different model from the usual sequel handoff, and one that should ease some nerves for longtime players. Tell us what you think in the comments, and follow us on X, Bluesky, YouTube, and Instagram.
