Brazil just put esports inside the government
Cadu Albuquerque has been named the country's first National Director of Esports and will work inside the National Secretariat for Sport Betting and Economic Development of Sport.
Brazil has appointed its first National Director of Esports, giving competitive gaming a formal place inside the federal government. The role went to Cadu Albuquerque, who previously led the Rio de Janeiro State Federation of Electronic Sports.
The federal government confirmed the appointment recently, and Albuquerque now works within the National Secretariat for Sport Betting and Economic Development of Sport. From that position, he will help shape public policy, guide tournament initiatives, and steer Brazil’s broader approach to esports.
It is a telling move for a country that already has a deep competitive gaming scene. Brazilian teams and players are active across titles such as Rocket League, Counter-Strike, VALORANT, and League of Legends, and the new office signals that the government wants esports treated with more weight moving forward.
Albuquerque also brings experience from FERJEE and work alongside partners in the private sector, including ESL FACEIT Group. That background should matter as Brazil looks to connect government, organizers, and the local scene under one official umbrella.
