Fortnite’s next update has a date, and it brings more than one big change

Epic Games' v40.20 update is due on April 16 and will add a new Fortnite Festival season, new store items, and the full shift of Save The World into free-to-play access.

Fortnite has its next major update lined up for Thursday, April 16, when Epic Games will push v40.20 live. The patch lands during Chapter 7, Season 2 and follows the April 1 update, which means downtime will again interrupt play while the new build goes in.

That next drop is not just about routine maintenance. Epic is also bringing in a new season of Fortnite Festival, complete with a new Battle Pass, while Chapter 7, Season 2 continues through early June. The timing gives Epic room to keep the season moving without cutting it short.

The biggest change in v40.20 is the move that opens Save The World to free-to-play access. Until now, that mode had to be bought separately. After the update, it will sit alongside Battle Royale, Festival, and Fortnite OG as part of the game’s core free offerings.

Battle Royale players will also get Act 2 of Showdown, which continues the fight between the Ice King and the Foundation under the title The Elites. Epic has this set up as the second of three acts, with an Epilogue and an end-of-season live event still coming later in the season.

There is also fresh shop content on the way. The update will add new skins for Liv Morgan and Stone Cold Steve Austin, arriving in time for WrestleMania weekend, along with new Sidekicks, Emotes, and other cosmetics.

For players waiting on the next big Fortnite reset, April 16 is the date to watch. If you have thoughts on the update, share them in the comments and follow us on X, Bluesky, YouTube, Instagram.
