Crimson Desert patch swaps AI-made paintings for studio-created art

Pearl Abyss issued an apology and, in a major update released over the weekend, removed AI-generated 2D assets and replaced them with artwork from its internal team.

Pearl Abyss removed the AI-generated paintings that players found in Crimson Desert as part of a large update released over the weekend. The studio said the images were left over from early development and replaced them with art created by its internal team.

The problem surfaced within days of Crimson Desert’s launch when players posted screenshots of in-game paintings that showed obvious AI artifacts and strange geometry. Pearl Abyss issued a public apology and promised the assets would be swapped out, saying it had used AI tools during early production with the expectation that those placeholders would be replaced before release.

The developer followed through. After the weekend update, players reported and later confirmed that the questionable paintings had been taken out and replaced by hand-made pieces from the studio’s artists. Console PC Gaming wrote about the studio’s initial apology earlier this month in a separate piece, as Pearl Abyss apologised after AI-generated images made it into Crimson Desert’s PS5 release.

The update that removed the AI art was part of a broader patch that included numerous gameplay fixes and adjustments mentioned in the full notes. Players had to do some digging after the patch to confirm every flagged asset had been addressed, but reports from the community indicate the replacements are in place.

For context, Pearl Abyss said the AI tools were used to “explore tone and atmosphere” during early stages and that the studio never intended for those assets to appear in the final product. It apologized for the lapse in transparency and for the assets making it into the release.

Pearl Abyss has signaled it will keep working on post-launch fixes for Crimson Desert. The switch from AI placeholders to studio-made art closes this particular chapter, but players will be watching future updates closely.
