Blizzard will give every WoW character one free transmog in the 12.0.1 patch

Blizzard will grant every World of Warcraft player-character a free transmog as part of the 12.0.1 update, the developer confirmed on the official Blizzard forums. The refund is intended to fix an oversight introduced with the 12.0.0 pre-patch.

The problem started when the pre-patch moved WoW from a gear-based transmog system to a slot-based system. Previously applied transmogs were removed from characters on login and saved appearances were converted into Custom Sets. Players who wanted to set a character back to their previous look had to pay the standard gold cost to apply the first transmog, which affected players with many alts.

Blizzard acknowledged the error and said the 12.0.1 update will grant one free Transmog to every player-character. The free transmog will be applied automatically the next time a player creates an outfit on that character. The studio apologized for the inconvenience and called the charge an oversight. The forum post also noted a separate issue with Legion Artifact appearances. Right now those appearances only work on weapons with compatible categories. Blizzard plans to add Legion Artifact override options so players can apply those looks to more weapon types in the 12.0.1 update.

Players who logged in and saw their current transmog cleared may find their old sets preserved under Custom Sets. For help locating those collections after the pre-patch, see the guide on where to find your transmog sets after the WoW pre-patch.
