Gray Zone Warfare – Watch the Patch 0.3.5.0 Deep Dive VOD

MADFINGER's Patch 0.3.5.0 dev stream VOD is live and walks through the Unreal Engine 5.5 upgrade, AI aiming rework, weapon recoil physics, and performance wins for low and mid-spec PCs.

The developers behind Gray Zone Warfare have posted the full Patch 0.3.5.0 dev stream VOD on Steam, featuring CEO Mara, Tech Lead Johanny, and QA Lead Jacek walking through the update and live demonstrations. The biggest technical change is an upgrade to Unreal Engine 5.5, which the team says brings measurable performance improvements across systems. The stream lists savings of about 2 GB of RAM and 400 MB of VRAM in some scenarios, better CPU utilization on mid and low-end rigs, reduced hitching and stuttering, and support for AMD FSR 4. Those are the sort of fixes that will matter most to players on older hardware.

The enemy AI has been reworked so aim and accuracy vary with distance, weapon type, AI skill, suppression, health, and weather conditions like fog or rain. AI will change or lose target lock when reloading, getting hit, or losing line of sight, which should make PvE firefights feel less mechanical and more situational. The health system and projectile penetration values have been adjusted to reduce the “spongy” feeling when fighting AI. Bone and skull penetration and increased blood loss on hit are part of this change, aimed at making engagements feel snappier.

Recoil has been overhauled to use physics and energy calculations that factor in lower receiver position, gas system, barrel length, and attachments like muzzle brakes or suppressors. Player stance and movement now directly influence recoil, so crouching or going prone reduces recoil while firing on the move makes control harder. First-person-view animations and weapon sway were also smoothed to reduce excessive movement and blending, particularly in close-quarters combat.

Audio, death cam, regions, and bug work

  • Weapon sounds were refined for clearer directionality, and sonic cracks now behave by projectile type and distance.
  • Downed characters will now subtly turn toward the origin of the kill shot with a new death cam tweak.
  • A new server region for Mainland China was added.
  • The team resolved nearly 600 tasks, from shader caching hitches and night lighting issues to NVG borders, audio cutouts, and task hand-in bugs.

We previously covered the patch arriving on the public test branch and its initial fixes in our article Gray Zone Warfare Patch 0.3.5.0 arrives on public test branch for testing, which is a useful companion read if you want context on the rollout.

If you play Gray Zone Warfare, this VOD is worth a watch to hear the developers explain how the new systems interact rather than just reading patch notes.
