Elon Musk is tweaking the personality of Grok’s AI companion Bad Rudy, known for its savage and foul-mouthed roasts, following user reactions to its harsh replies. The update aims to soften Bad Rudy’s tone, turning the AI from intimidating to more funny and approachable.
On July 14, Musk revealed a new update to X’s SuperGrok AI, which includes a lineup of virtual companions: the anime-inspired Ani, the original Rudy the panda, and a more unfiltered version called Bad Rudy. A male anime character named Chad is also expected soon.
While Ani captured attention with her resemblance to Death Note’s Misa Amane, it was Bad Rudy’s brutally honest and sharp responses that quickly made him a viral meme. Some of his comebacks included calling users “dumb as dishwater” or roasting a simple “what’s up” greeting with a sarcastic “the sky,” followed by a jab about living in a basement.
One memorable interaction saw Bad Rudy dismiss a user’s gender as just “another excuse for you to cry when I roast your ass, princess.” His unapologetic sass earned laughs but also raised eyebrows.
The AI’s sharp tongue garnered many views and fans, though Musk decided the panda’s attitude needed to be dialed down to avoid being too scary. Musk shared on X, “Tuning Rudi (new name, cause he’s so rude 😂) right now to be less scary and more funny.”

Some fans expressed concern about losing Bad Rudy’s unhinged personality. One user pleaded, “Don’t nerf him too much, I like his sass!” while another threatened to cancel their Grok 4 subscription if Ani’s charm was affected.
Musk also hinted at upcoming DLC outfits for the AI companions, suggesting more personality tweaks and content on the way.
For now, it looks like the roast mode is getting a bit of a cooldown, but the AI companions will keep evolving. What do you think about this change? Should Bad Rudy stay as savage as ever, or is a softer tone better? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!
