Dying Light’s Original Game Gets Visual and Audio Boost With Free Retouched Update

Techland releases a free update improving textures, lighting, and sound on PS5 and PS4.

Despite being over ten years old and having a sequel out, the first Dying Light game is still getting some love from Techland. This week, the developer is rolling out a free Retouched update for PS5 and PS4, focusing on visual and audio upgrades that sharpen the experience without completely overhauling the game.

Techland is clear that this is about “squeezing out even more from the Dying Light you already love.” The update enhances texture quality by upscaling surroundings, making wooden boards and metal sheets look sharper and more detailed. Plus, it adds improved lighting effects, physics-based rendering, and 8K ultra shadow quality to give surfaces extra depth and pop.

One cool touch: original composer Paweł Blaszczak returned to refresh the soundtrack. They’ve added new tracks and ambient sounds to deepen the atmosphere, while combat hit reactions now sound more impactful, every swing and zombie takedown is juiced up to feel satisfying. I don’t know about you, but that’s a neat way to breathe fresh air into a game that’s been around a while.

The improvements will vary depending on your platform, with the PS5 version running in backward compatibility mode expected to look better than on PS4. The update hits on June 26, and it’s free for everyone who owns the game. It’s kinda impressive that Techland is still patching and polishing a decade-old title. Are you the type to still play the original Dying Light, or have you moved on?
