Bungie Delays Marathon Post-Launch Content to Remove Plagiarized Art

Bungie admits to using stolen art in Marathon, delaying some content to fix the issue.

Bungie recently faced a challenging situation when an artist spotted stolen artwork in the Marathon Alpha. The developer admitted the mistake and confirmed that some post-launch content will be delayed while they remove the plagiarized assets. This update matters because it shows Bungie taking responsibility, but it also means fans might have to wait longer for new content.

What Happened with the Stolen Art?

During the Marathon Alpha, an artist recognized several posters directly copied from her 2017 work. This discovery sparked controversy, and Bungie quickly responded, acknowledging the issue and promising to “make things right” with the original creators, the group called Antireal.

Joe Cross, Marathon’s Art Director, explained that an artist involved early in pre-production used graphic elements from another designer without permission. These assets were integrated into the game back in 2020. Bungie is now reviewing all of that artist’s work and is delaying early game previews to avoid showing any plagiarized content.

Impact on Marathon’s Development

Marathon has already experienced delays, and Bungie is clear that the game’s release date won’t be pushed back again. However, the need to remove stolen art is slowing down post-launch content development. Bungie is committed to preventing similar issues in the future, promising a thorough review process.

While details about how Bungie plans to “make things right” with the original artist, Fern, remain vague, they intend to remove any art linked to her work, even if it’s become a key part of the game’s visual style.

The Artist’s Perspective

Fern shared her feelings about the situation, saying it was “vindicating” to see the plagiarism confirmed but also frustrating. She mentioned she didn’t pursue legal action due to the cost and difficulty of fighting a case against a major company like Sony.

Her experience highlights artists’ challenges when their work is used without credit or permission, especially in big projects.

What’s Next for Marathon?

It’s still unclear if these changes will affect the upcoming Open Beta, which is expected before Marathon’s September launch. Fans will be watching closely to see how Bungie handles this situation moving forward.
