It seems we’ve got some talk surrounding the Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG) Pocket, but not all of it is what fans hoped for. The Pokémon Company recently confirmed there are “no plans” to add this shiny new addition to the competitive circuit. Cue the collective sigh from players everywhere!
Launched in late October 2024, Pokémon TCG Pocket had an interesting start, reportedly racking over $120 million in its first two weeks. That’s pretty impressive. But despite its success and features that include competitive battling, it looks like it won’t be making a splash at official tournaments soon.
The company made this announcement while reflecting on its existing lineup of competitive titles. Players can now battle it in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, Pokémon Go, and the classic Pokémon Trading Card Game. These titles have already carved out their spots in fan-favorite competitions.
This decision appears partly influenced by balance issues within the game itself. Players have reported a lack of variety since its release last year; many top decks consistently dominate ranked battles. If you ask me, that’s a bummer for anyone wanting more playstyle diversity!
The situation was highlighted during last weekend’s Pokémon European International Championships (EUIC), where competitors fought fiercely for thousands of dollars worth of prizes and coveted spots at this year’s top-tier championship in Anaheim, California.
If you missed it: Wolfe “Wolfey” Glick took home victory by showcasing his skills against tough competition! Congratulations to him, and a shout-out to British player Dyl Yeomans, who snagged second place!
The excitement doesn’t stop there! Mark your calendars because The Pokémon Company announced a special presentation called Pokemon Presents, scheduled for February 27 at 2 PM UTC/GMT (6 AM PT / 9 AM ET). This event promises updates on upcoming video game projects and surprises around the corner!
