Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford hinted at the next installment in the Borderlands franchise. This latest tease comes shortly after the criticism of the recently released Borderlands movie.
Posting on X, Pitchford acknowledged the feedback and assured fans that the studio is working on the next Borderlands game. “So what you’re saying is: You like what my friends and I do with our Borderlands video games even more than you like what some of the biggest and best cast and crew of film makers on the planet have done,” he wrote. “I’m super flattered! We’re working extra hard four you on what’s next….”
Publisher 2K had already confirmed the active development of the next Borderlands title earlier this year, following its acquisition of Gearbox Entertainment from Embracer Group for $460 million.
In an interview with GamesRadar last month, Pitchford hinted that fans wouldn’t have to wait much longer for more information. “I haven’t been perfect at hiding the fact that we’re working on many things, and that we’re working on big things,” he stated. “I’m confident that our fans are going to be very, very happy with the next video game project when we are ready to announce it. And I will tell you that we’re not going to be making people wait for a long time before we announce it.”
Pitchford even suggested that an announcement could come “before the end of the year” and “maybe sooner.” He added, “I have the biggest and best team that I’ve ever had working on what we know is exactly what our fans want from us – so I’m very, very thrilled. I can’t wait to talk about it! I wish I could just gush right now because we’ve got so much to say!”
The Borderlands series, which launched in 2009, has sold nearly 87 million units to date, according to 2K, while Borderlands 3, released in 2019, is the publisher’s fastest-selling title, with over 20 million copies sold.
