NieR: Automata from Platinum Games has shipped or digitally sold over eight million units worldwide. The game was critically acclaimed as a deep-action RPG, and as of April 2023, it has reached 7.5 million shipments and downloads, an eye-catching 500,000 uptick over ten months.
First released for PS4, NieR: Automata eventually came to PC, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. It was positioned like a Drakengard sequel, set many millennia into the future, when aliens invade Earth and humanity flees to the Moon. Androids 2B and 9S are part of YoRHa, taking part in sorties against machines created by the aliens.
Since its first appearance, NieR: Automata has enjoyed universal appeal regarding combat, storytelling, characterization, and themes. Saito had said in November that a new game in the series wasn’t in development, though he promised that the series would continue. However, the characters have appeared in other games, the latest was 2B, who joined Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising.
