Following the successful release of Cyberpunk 2077 Phantom Liberty, CD Projekt Red is charting a new course in its developmental journey. The studio’s third quarterly earnings presentation for 2023 has shed light on a significant transition, with a major portion of its team now diving into the mystical world of The Witcher, specifically on the upcoming project codenamed Polaris.
Previously, the team was distributed between Phantom Liberty and Polaris, with around 30% working on the Witcher project. As of October, the dynamics have shifted dramatically. Nearly half of CD Projekt Red’s developers are now committed to Polaris, making it the centerpiece of the studio’s current efforts.
While the studio is gearing up for its next big fantasy venture, Cyberpunk 2077 hasn’t been left behind. About 30% of the team is still enhancing the Cyberpunk universe, focusing on the Ultimate Edition. This phase, referred to as “Devs in transfer,” hints at a phased transition to either Polaris or other innovative projects at the studio.
The reallocation towards Polaris signals an exciting future for The Witcher series. However, given CD Projekt Red’s history with extensive development cycles, as seen with Cyberpunk 2077, fans might need to be patient. The growing dedication to Polaris promises a rich and immersive gaming experience, though its release may still be on the distant horizon.
