A modder who goes by rejuvenate has released Witcher Online, a multiplayer mod for The Witcher 3 that lets players share the Continent with other people. The mod builds on previous work from the author, including the Wolven Trainer, and aims to make the game a place to hang out with friends rather than a solo-only RPG.
Witcher Online is primarily a social co-op experience. The mod description says the mod provides a place “to play with your friends, customize your character using Custom Player Characters and relax in taverns using Chill Out. Chat with strangers and perform emotes to roleplay with other players.” Players can meet up, emote, and fish together on piers, and there are systems to support roleplay and social interaction.
The project has limits. It does not synchronize horses between clients so players riding mounts will often appear to be floating or moving in midair to others. Sailboats also do not sync. Time of day and other world-state elements are not shared, and you cannot play Gwent together in-game. If you want to play the card game with friends there is a separate option via the standalone Steam release of GWENT.
Installation requires a handful of other Nexus Mods to function. Rejuvenate lists Custom Player Characters, Chill Out, and Community Patch – Shared Imports as prerequisites. A full installation guide and feature list are available at the mod’s documentation site on GitBook at rejuvenate.gitbook.io/witcheronline.
Some parts of the game remain single-player only because synchronizing complex systems across clients is difficult. Combat with groups of enemies does not reliably play out for multiple players at once. The mod leans into social play instead of turning the game into a full MMO with shared world physics and synced encounters. It is notable that the mod exists at all given The Witcher 3’s scope and age. Rejuvenate’s work builds on existing community tools and patches to assemble a multiplayer layer on top of a game built for solo play. Players interested in trying it should read the installation notes and back up saves before installing any large mod bundle.
