Capcom’s RESIDENT EVIL Showcase confirmed the difficulty options available in Resident Evil Requiem and clarified how the game treats saving and autosaves during Grace Ashcroft’s sections.
The core mechanical distinction to know: when Grace is the playable character, Standard (Classic) limits autosaves and requires the player to use Ink Ribbons to save, while Standard (Modern) (listed in menus as Standard (Modern)) uses the series’ more familiar save system. A Casual mode is also available for an easier, story-focused run.
How the three difficulty options work
The Showcase presented three named choices for a first playthrough. The menu labels and the practical differences are preserved here so players can pick the setting that matches their goals.
- Casual – Intended to let players enjoy the story and puzzles with minimal threat, presented as the easiest option.
- Standard (Modern) – Presented as a balanced, contemporary Resident Evil experience. The reveal notes that this mode can be switched to Casual from the game over screen.
- Standard (Classic) – Framed as a traditional Resident Evil difficulty closer to older entries in the series; during Grace’s gameplay autosaves are limited and Ink Ribbons are required to record progress.
Ink Ribbons are a returning, deliberate-save resource first seen in the original Resident Evil and used in earlier entries to force save decisions. Requiem brings that mechanic back for the Classic-flavored option: using an Ink Ribbon consumes a consumable to write progress, and autosaves will not be as generous during Grace’s sections when Classic is active.
Which one should a player pick?
Choice depends on whether the player wants to breeze through story and puzzles, prefers a standard, modern comfort level with saves, or wants the tension of limited-save, classic-style play. Long-term series fans may favor Standard (Classic) for a closer match to the older Resident Evil save economy, while newcomers or players focused on narrative flow may prefer Standard (Modern) or Casual. Expect the menu to add one or two harder post-completion difficulties after the main game is finished, the Showcase indicated additional harder settings will likely unlock once the campaign is complete.
