Warframe has quietly maintained its position as a popular live-service game for over ten years now. Developer Digital Extremes is eager to bring the RPG shooter to the upcoming Switch 2, but progress is on hold until Nintendo sends them a development kit.
At the recent TennoCon event, Digital Extremes CEO and Soulframe lead Steve Sinclair shared that their technical team is excited about the Switch 2’s improved hardware. He mentioned the team can’t wait to use the console’s high-speed cores and other features once they get their hands on a dev kit. Sinclair said, “I know our programmers are just like, ‘Oh, I can’t wait’, so we definitely have plans. When we get a dev kit we’ll be doing a custom build for Warframe, absolutely.”
He also pointed out that the enhanced Nintendo hardware should allow for faster load times and other improvements, but actual development can’t begin until the dev kits are available. Sinclair joked, “So if you know anyone…” hinting at the hope for quicker access.
Currently, Warframe is playable on Switch 2 through backwards compatibility, but it doesn’t yet take advantage of the system’s distinct capabilities or upgrades. A dedicated port will be necessary to unlock those benefits.
