VRR Boosts Cyberpunk 2077 Performance on PS5 Pro Up to 120FPS

Cyberpunk 2077’s VRR support on PS5 Pro unlocks frame rates up to 120FPS, improving gameplay smoothness.

You don’t often see a patch breathe new life into a game like Cyberpunk 2077 just by flipping a setting, but Patch 2.3 did exactly that on the PS5 Pro. Thanks to the introduction of VRR (Variable Refresh Rate), players are now experiencing frame rates of up to 120fps in Performance mode, something that previously seemed like wishful thinking.

Digital Foundry’s recent tests revealed that VRR support on the PS5 Pro not only synchronizes the console’s output with VRR-compatible displays to reduce screen tearing but also unlocks performance gains that exceed expectations. The average frame rate reportedly reaches around 81fps, representing a significant improvement from previous levels.

For those rocking a vanilla PS5, the benefits remain noticeable, too, with VRR helping maintain an average of 63fps. Not quite the Pro’s fireworks, but certainly a smoother ride through Night City’s neon-lit chaos.

If you’re scratching your head, wondering what VRR exactly does, it basically matches your TV or monitor’s refresh rate with the PS5’s frame output, reducing the annoying tearing effect and allowing frame rates to flex more freely. Honestly, I can’t believe it took this long for this to get proper support on Cyberpunk.

But here’s a question: how many of you actually have the right HDMI cable to get VRR working properly? It’s a small detail often overlooked but crucial for squeezing out these frame rate benefits.

While this update feels like a free performance injection, it’s unclear if CD Projekt Red will follow up with further PS5 Pro-specific patches. You might be wondering if a full PS5 Pro patch is coming anytime soon. Well, don’t hold your breath just yet. Still, VRR support is a welcome surprise that makes the game feel a bit more alive on Sony’s beefier console.

For those who’ve tried out Cyberpunk 2077 with VRR enabled, how’s your experience?
