Valve is about to launch some fresh updates to Steam store pages that might change how you browse games. These tweaks aim to make the store more visually appealing and informative, with wider pages and new media options.
First up, Steam store pages will get a width boost from 1200px overall, while the main content area jumps from 616px to 780px wide. So bigger screenshots and trailers can fit comfortably without feeling cramped. Valve says this will help developers show off their games better, and yes, the pages will still shrink down nicely for smaller screens.
One of the cooler upgrades involves the description area. Steam has supported .gif files for a while, but now it will accept .mp4 and .webm videos too. These clips can be up to 12 seconds long and no bigger than 100MB, letting devs demonstrate gameplay mechanics or add some flair to their pages. Valve promises the backend will handle compression and quality so videos look good on desktop, Steam Deck, and mobile apps without you needing to worry.
These changes will first appear in a Beta phase lasting a few weeks. Valve wants to give developers time to upload new assets before the wider rollout happens. Makes sense, right? I mean, who wouldn’t want to spice up their store page with some short videos?
Curious how this might affect your Steam shopping? I’m kind of excited to see how developers use the new space and video options. It could be a bit of a climb for some to adjust, but it’s a nice step toward a richer store experience.
