VALORANT Changes the Map Pool Icebox Out, Abyss Returns in Patch 11.04

Riot Games will swap Icebox for Abyss in the map rotation, hitting pro and casual play soon.

Riot Games is tweaking the map rotation in patch 11.04, removing Icebox and reintroducing Abyss. This might stir up how you queue or watch pro matches, since the map pool affects everything from casual lobbies to the big leagues.

Starting August 19th, Icebox won’t be playable in Competitive, Deathmatch, or Premier modes. However, it will stay in pro play until after VCT Stage 2, just before VALORANT Champions 2025 kicks off. The return of Abyss is big news, especially since G2 Esports called it their “favorite map to die on”, a bit of a love-hate vibe, right?

New Map Pool Lineup

  • Abyss
  • Ascent
  • Bind
  • Corrode
  • Haven
  • Lotus
  • Sunset

With Icebox rotating out again, it’s now tied with Split as the most removed map in VALORANT’s history. That’s kinda wild considering Icebox’s mixed reception. Many pros feel it’s stuck in a rut without meaningful updates from Riot, which has been frustrating for players who want fresh strategies and better mid-map dynamics.

Is Icebox Still Worth Playing?

Despite getting rotated out three times, Riot hasn’t made major changes to Icebox. Pro players often complain about the map’s limited variety and a mid section that doesn’t add much late in rounds unless someone’s lurking. Tyson ‘TenZ’ Ngo, a retired pro, suggested on his stream that Riot should “reopen the B Alley area and remove the Tube” to open up mid ground. He even called Icebox “gonna be cancer in pro play,” which is a brutal but honest take.

Will Riot tweak Icebox before it returns? That’s still up in the air. Esports Insider reached out to Riot for comments and will update if they hear back.

More in Patch 11.04

Aside from the map swap, patch 11.04 will reset competitive ranks, introduce a fresh skinline, and launch a new battle pass. Agent balance changes are also on the way, targeting abilities that are tough to counter. So, you might wanna keep an eye on those, too.

What do you think about Icebox leaving and Abyss making a comeback? Speak yourself in the comments below! I am Mihaela and stay tuned for more.
