Unreleased Metal Gear Solid Titles Allegedly Found in MGS Master Collection Files

According to a Reddit user, hidden references to Metal Gear Solid 4, Metal Gear Solid 5, and Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker were discovered in the files of the recently released MGS Master Collection Volume 1. While the collection offers various titles from the series, these three games were noticeably absent. The Reddit user’s discovery suggests that they might have been considered for inclusion at one point, or could even be planned for a future collection.

MGS Master Collection Volume 1 hit the market just this week, offering fans a mix of old and new. The compilation currently includes Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, along with Metal Gear Solid and its VR Missions/Special Missions. The HD Collection versions of Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty and Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater are part of the package.

One of the most talked-about aspects is the absence of Metal Gear Solid 4 and Peace Walker from the collection. Both games have never been playable on platforms other than their original releases, MGS 4 on PS3 and Peace Walker on PSP. While Metal Gear Solid 5 is already available on modern platforms like the PS4 and Xbox One, neither MGS 4 nor Peace Walker has made that leap.

Ryan Payton, the assistant producer of Metal Gear Solid 4, once mentioned that the game was “running beautifully and smoothly” on Xbox 360 during its development. This information was part of Steven L Kent’s book, The Ultimate History of Video Games Vol 2. However, due to storage limitations, PS3’s BD-ROM discs could hold up to 54GB, whereas Xbox 360’s DVD-ROM could only store 8.3 GB. The game was never ported. This choice was further justified by Sony’s Jack Tretton, stating that MGS 4 was not just exclusive to the PS3 but was “only possible” due to the larger storage capacity of Blu-ray discs.
