Twitch CEO apologizes after Emiru assault at TwitchCon and for interview comments

The chief executive of Twitch, Dan Clancy, has issued a public apology after a fan assaulted streamer Emiru during a meet-and-greet at TwitchCon, and for comments he made in a convention interview. The apology was posted on Twitch’s official X account and promises a formal review of the incident, as well as changes to event security and rules for IRL streaming at future gatherings.

Clancy put the blame squarely on the platform, saying the incident should not have happened, and that Twitch mismanaged its communications afterward. His statement included an explicit apology to Emiru, a pledge to conduct a formal analysis of what went wrong at the meet-and-greet, and a broader review of TwitchCon security.

Clancy also referred to remarks he made in an on-site interview that many viewers found defensive. The interview covered multiple topics, and when asked about Emiru’s assault he suggested the problem extended beyond Twitch and raised the idea that creators can manage communities through bans and moderation. That framing drew criticism because Emiru had previously said she felt uncomfortable holding the meet and greet for security reasons but was bound by a contractual obligation to appear.

There is also a video of Clancy’s interview from TwitchCon. Watch it here:

Clancy said Twitch will reexamine how it handles IRL or mobile-style streaming at events, and look at accessibility and on-site safety. Those promises arrive amid broader questions about how much trust creators can place in the platform’s safety teams and event planning. We previously wrote about Twitch’s changing viewership and trust issues after the platform took steps to clean up viewbotting, which is part of the wider discussion about confidence in Twitch’s moderation and enforcement analysis of recent Twitch viewership shifts.

Emiru has not issued a public response to the apology at the time of writing, and many viewers remain critical of Twitch’s handling of both the incident and Clancy’s interview. The platform’s safety policies and the future of in-person events are still developing stories.
