Sony reportedly canceled the Twisted Metal live service game, developed by British studio Firesprite, during a significant wave of layoffs last year. It’s a tough break for fans who were eager to see this classic franchise return in a new format.
The reboot had shifted development from its original creators at Lucid Games to Firesprite. The goal was to launch alongside the Twisted Metal TV series, which debuted in 2023. Twisted Metal refers to a project called ‘Project Copper’, described as “a third-person vehicular action combat game” based on “a classic IP owned by PlayStation.”
The story behind Firesprite is intriguing. Established in 2012 by ex-members of SIE Studio Liverpool after Sony closed it, Firesprite was acquired by Sony in late 2021 and has since worked on titles like the PS VR2 release Horizon Call of The Mountain.
PS5 by the end of this decade, but half have been scrapped following some serious hurdles. These include canceling high-profile projects like the multiplayer spin-off for The Last of Us. Their standout success? That would be Helldivers 2, which smashed records upon its launch last May.
