Todd Howard Explains Fallout’s Shift from Movie to Series

Todd Howard shares insights on adapting Fallout for television instead of film.

Bethesda’s Todd Howard recently explained the decision to adapt Fallout into a television series rather than a movie. His comments highlight the franchise’s expansive nature and suggest that compressing its rich world into a feature film would’ve been inadequate.

In a detailed report from Variety, Howard discussed how initial interest in a feature film adaptation was met with concerns about storytelling. “Originally, many people were approaching to do a feature film. And looking at what we wanted to do for this one, that felt too compressed,” he stated. The vastness of the Fallout universe prompted them to seek new narratives rather than condense existing ones. “We’d like to watch the next story, or new stories in that world,” he emphasized.

This strategy seems to have paid off for Bethesda and Amazon, as fan reception has been positive. With Season 1 already available on Prime Video and Season 2 in development, expectations are high for continuing this narrative journey.

Howard also touched upon their approach towards welcoming players back to the games as more seasons roll out. “So we had done the work for Season 1 to make the games welcoming to a new audience and have them in a good place,” he explained. Learning from their successes will shape how they move forward with additional content tailored for newcomers and returning fans.

While there’s a buzz around future entries like Fallout 5, Bethesda focuses on The Elder Scrolls VI. Discussions about possible remasters or updates for titles such as Fallout 76 remain open-ended.

For those eager to catch up, don’t forget that Season 1 of Fallout is still streaming on Prime Video. At the same time, other adaptations, like an animated Devil May Cry series, have recently hit Netflix. Fans can gear up for The Last of Us’ second season, which will debut soon on HBO.
