Tim Sweeney says Epic’s mass layoffs will flood recruiters with ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ resumes

Epic informed staff in an internal letter that the layoffs were driven by a downturn in Fortnite engagement, broader industry challenges, and factors the company said were unique to Epic. The downsizing also led to the cancellation of three Fortnite modes: Ballistic, Festival Battle Stage, and Rocket Racing. Rocket Racing had been a major piece of Epic’s multi-game metaverse ambitions.
Sweeney’s public referral for his former employees is a clear signal to recruiters and other studios. He added on X that anyone with Epic on their resume is likely in the “top few percent” of their discipline. Still, the sheer scale of the layoffs increases competition for every opening and changes the hiring market dynamics for affected developers.
Beyond the immediate job market effects, the cuts mark another moment in the industry’s ongoing churn. Hundreds of developers who helped build Fortnite’s systems and modes are now looking for new teams, and their availability will be felt across studios hiring this year.
