The Outer Worlds 2 just made history as Xbox’s first $80 game, a move that’s raising eyebrows and wallets. After Xbox’s Games Showcase, store listings revealed the higher price tag for the upcoming RPG, with a Premium Edition costing a hefty $100.
Microsoft warned us last month about the price hikes, saying games would hit $80 later this year due to rising development costs and changing market conditions. They also raised their console prices globally to keep things spicy.
“We understand that these changes are challenging, and they were made with careful consideration given market conditions and the rising cost of development,” Microsoft stated. They also mentioned offering more ways to play games on any screen while maintaining value for Xbox players. Sounds like a lot of promises, but what does $80 get you?
This price bump isn’t exclusive to Xbox. Nintendo recently launched the Nintendo Switch 2 alongside its first $80 title, Mario Kart World. Sony also increased PS5 Digital Edition prices in some regions, though not in the US. The industry seems to be marching in sync toward steeper costs.
On the gameplay side, Xbox and Obsidian gave a detailed look at The Outer Worlds 2 during the showcase, confirming an October 29, 2025 release on Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC. The game will also be available on Xbox Game Pass from day one, which might soften the blow for some.
So here we are, facing the reality of $80 games. Is this the new normal? Will players bite the bullet or push back? What do you think about this jump in prices? I’m curious to hear your take in the comments below!
