Tencent’s Latest Acquisition is Kuro Games

Oh yes, Tencent is definitely still on fire...

Right when you think that the Chinese tech giant has done expanding its empire, they swoop in and grab hold of another game studio. This time, it’s Kuro Games, the talented minds behind Wuthering Waves. So, what does this mean for players and developers alike? Buckle up as we dive into this latest development!

As reported by Youxi Putao and later confirmed by Gematsu, Tencent has purchased 37% of Kuro’s shares. An existing 24.4% brings their total to a solid 51.4%. Yes, a controlling stake, and just like that, Tencent becomes the only external shareholder at Kuro Games.

Now, let’s address the elephant in the room and see what this means for creative freedom. According to an internal memo from Kuro Games to its staff (which is always a good sign), things are set to remain operationally unchanged. They are looking at this acquisition through rose-colored glasses, likening their situation to Riot Games and Supercell, two heavyweights who seem to have thrived under Tencent’s wing.

The memo states: Based on our past collaborative experiences with Tencent, we firmly believe this external shareholder change will provide Kuro with a more stable external environment. Sounds promising enough to me! But let’s not forget there’s often a catch with such deals. Will Tencent allow them to maintain their unique flavor? Or will they push for monetization strategies that might turn Wuthering Waves into another gacha machine?

Kuro reassures us of their undying love for games and players alike: Over the past decade, our original intention of creating games has never changed… We will continue to love our players, games, and team. That sounds sweet, but history tells us that love can sometimes take unexpected turns in corporate gaming.

The silver lining here lies in their upcoming release, Version 2.0 of Wuthering Waves, which is set to drop on January 2nd. This could be where we see if all these changes impact gameplay or whether it remains true to its roots.

So here we are again, the community left wondering. Is Tencent a benevolent overlord providing stability? Or is there more lurking beneath the surface? What do you think about another acquisition from one of gaming’s biggest giants? Spill your thoughts down below.
