Naoki Hamaguchi, director of Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade, confirmed in an interview with Automaton that the Nintendo Switch 2 edition is a port of the PS5 Intergrade build, not the older PS4 release.
Hamaguchi said the PS5 Intergrade release included upgraded assets compared with the PS4 version. The development team used that PS5 Intergrade build as the starting point for ports to Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox Series X and Series S. The director explained the ports presented different constraints. Xbox Series S ran into memory limits. Switch 2 faced performance limitations in handheld mode.
Engineers adjusted settings and rendering targets so both consoles could reach a stable 30 frames per second. Hamaguchi singled out handheld mode on Switch 2 as the area that required the most tuning to maintain performance while preserving visual fidelity.
Why Cloud’s hair looks different on Switch 2
The team uses temporal anti-aliasing, or TAA, to smooth character outlines and reduce jagged edges. On Switch 2 handheld, the game sometimes reduces its internal resolution to keep performance steady. That lower internal resolution makes TAA less stable and can expose jagged edges in fine details like hair. Hamaguchi said this is what makes Cloud’s hair appear frizzier and more jagged on the Switch 2 handheld build compared with other platforms.
The director also reiterated broader series plans. He said the team will not compromise on the graphics for Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 because of its multiplatform release.
