The title of the sequel to The Super Mario Bros Movie has been accidentally revealed ahead of its official announcement. NBCUniversal briefly mentioned the name Super Mario World in a press release for its Upfront Showcase, before quickly removing it, suggesting the reveal was premature.
The press release listed upcoming films streaming on Peacock, including titles like Megan 2.0, Nobody 2, and, notably, Super Mario World. This caught fans’ attention since the original movie’s post-credits scene teased Yoshi’s arrival, which fits perfectly with the Super Mario World theme from the SNES era, where Yoshi made his debut.
In the post-credits sequence, the camera pans to a Yoshi egg hatching in the sewers beneath New York, accompanied by Yoshi’s iconic cry. This strongly hints that the sequel will focus on Yoshi and the world introduced in the classic game.
The first movie was a massive hit, grossing $1.36 billion worldwide, making it the second highest-grossing film of its release year, just behind Barbie. It also ranks as the third-largest PG-rated movie in US history, surpassing blockbusters like The Dark Knight and Frozen II.
Last year, Nintendo and Illumination confirmed a second Mario movie was in the works, set for release on April 3, 2026. They described it as based on “the world of Super Mario Bros,” which aligns well with the leaked title Super Mario World.
While NBCUniversal has since edited the press release to remove the title, the slip-up gives us a strong clue about what to expect next. If the sequel follows the game’s storyline, Yoshi will likely play a central role, which could open up some fun new directions for the franchise.
