Stellaris 4.4 is about to let you crash into an ongoing war
Paradox is also testing Stellaris 4.3.4 on the open beta branch, with the full release targeted for Thursday, April 16.

Stellaris is adding a long-requested diplomacy twist in update 4.4, and game director Steven “Eladrin” Muray said it has been on his wishlist for a long time. The feature lets empires join wars already in progress, which should give the grand strategy game far more room for awkward alliances, last-minute rescues, and political backstabbing.
Muray tied the idea back to the launch trailer for the Apocalypse expansion, where the Commonwealth of Man stepped in to help the United Nations of Earth after a colony was destroyed by the Gamma Alien menace. Until now, Stellaris could not really recreate that kind of moment inside the game itself.
That changes with Stellaris 4.4, codenamed Pegasus. Players will be able to offer a Join War trade term to a faction that is already fighting or look for allies after a conflict has started. AI empires will consider their distance from other war participants before accepting, and they will prefer wars that suit their interests. In practice, such a system means that diplomacy is becoming a more complex process, rather than a straightforward yes-or-no decision before the first shot is fired.
Leaving a war will be harder than joining one. Muray said players will need to bribe the war leader on the other side to let them out, and some empires simply will not be interested in the deal. He also noted that former allies will not be thrilled if you bail on them halfway through the fight, even if the situation calls for it. He expanded on the feature in Paradox’s developer diary on the Gamma Menace.
The newer test branch is moving too. The latest open beta patch for Stellaris 4.3.4 Cetus was live, and players could access it through the game versions and betas tab in Steam. Paradox was targeting the full release of 4.3.4 for Thursday, April 16.
