Sony is reportedly considering moving the PlayStation 6 launch window into 2028, with 2029 also under consideration, according to a Bloomberg report. The company has not announced a PlayStation 6 or given any official release timing.
Bloomberg says the delay consideration stems from stronger than expected demand from AI datacenters for memory and chips, driving up RAM prices and making component costs and availability difficult to predict at this stage.
Sony finance leadership has signaled a longer PS5 lifecycle. In a recent financial briefing the company noted that the current generation may last longer than past cycles, and the CFO Lin Tao said:
Our view is that compared to conventional console lifecycles, looking at the PS4 lifecycle, it seems to be getting longer and longer. Especially the PS4, which was launched in 2013, and it’s been over a decade since then, but there are many active users enjoying the console, and they’re enjoying other consoles. So from that perspective, we believe that the PS5 is only in the middle of the journey, and we are really planning to expand it even further.
PlayStation 5 launched in November 2020. A 2028 launch would make that generation eight years long, and 2029 would push it to nine. The report and Sony comments suggest the PS5 will continue to receive support well into any PlayStation 6 era, with mid-generation hardware like the PS5 Pro acting as an intermediate option.
Microsoft’s next console could arrive earlier. AMD CEO Lisa Su has said AMD can support a Microsoft launch in 2027, according to reporting by Tom’s Hardware, which would put Microsoft on a different cadence from Sony if Sony delays further.
Bloomberg also notes that memory for the PS5 came from multiple suppliers including Micron, SK Hynix, and Samsung, but those vendors are now heavily supplying AI customers and reshaping the consumer memory market.
Sony has not published specifications or a timeline for a 10th-generation console, and the company has not confirmed that internal plans have been finalized. Earlier reporting suggested modular hardware options such as a detachable disc drive could be part of PlayStation 6 plans; see this report for more detail.
