Seth Green says his abandoned Star Wars animated comedy, Star Wars: Detours, would need fresh work before it could appear on Disney Plus, and that Lucasfilm may not be willing to pay for that update.
Green described the project as a madcap, Robot Chicken style take on the franchise and said the team produced 39 episodes. He told ComicBook in an interview available on YouTube that George Lucas originally wanted something like The Simpsons set inside Star Wars, and that the creators went after that exact tone.
Green said the plan changed after Kathleen Kennedy became Lucasfilm president just months after footage debuted at the 2012 Star Wars Celebration. Green said Kennedy pushed the franchise toward a long term focus on the sequel films and worried that Detours’ lighter approach could give new, younger audiences muddied portrayals of franchise icons.
On whether Detours could ever be released, Green said, “Detours itself would have to be edited, upgraded – they’d have to do new work on it to make it possible to put it on streaming. I just don’t think they’re willing to commit the spend to update and release this when they can’t see a clear benefit.” The shelved series was set to include legacy actors such as Anthony Daniels, Ahmed Best, and Billy Dee Williams and some unexpected casting choices, with Seth MacFarlane attached to voice Emperor Palpatine in at least one setup.
Green also noted that leadership changes at Lucasfilm after Kennedy left, with Dave Filoni and Lynwen Brennan taking senior roles, leave a small chance the show could take a surprise turn toward release. For now, what survives in public memory are stories like the series’ depiction of Vader celebrating Life Day.
