SEGA filed a new trademark for Shadow the Hedgehog in September, and the entry lists both merchandise and video game consoles, prompting renewed chatter about what could come next. Shadow last led a significant release in Sonic x Shadow Generations, which sold over 1 million copies on launch day.
SonicCity spotted the filing, and the entry appears in Japan’s public trademark coverage on SonicCity as well as in the official repositories. It covers clothing, toys, education, and more. Further down the paperwork, the filing names home video game consoles among the categories.
Marketing moves like this do not guarantee a game, but the inclusion of consoles in the trademark has raised questions about whether a remake or a new title could be in the works. Shadow is included in the recent multiplayer racer Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, which launched with a roster of characters and a range of original vehicles and gadgets.
Earlier this year SEGA accidentally made sales data public for several major games, a separate incident that kept the publisher in the headlines through the year.
