When you thought gaming subscriptions were all washed up with familiar faces like Xbox Game Pass and PlayStation Plus, a report suggests that Sega might be considering its game subscription service. Could we be seeing Sonic and pals in yet another monthly lineup?
A recent report indicates that Sega is mulling over a standalone game subscription model. If this pans out, some classic titles might get yanked from other currently available services. After all, why share your toys when you can have the whole playroom to yourself?
In an interview with BBC, Sega’s president, Shuji Utsumi, left us hanging by saying:
We’re thinking something – and discussing something – we cannot disclose right now.
Sounds super mysterious. He described subscription-based products as “very interesting,” hinting at possible opportunities without giving away too much. Classic move!
If you’ve been gaming lately (and, honestly, who hasn’t?), you know how typical these subscription schemes are nowadays. With live-service games demanding our wallets every few weeks instead of just once upon purchase time, it feels like every publisher is trying to grab their slice of that pie.
The numbers don’t lie: around 80 million gamers globally are subscribed to various services offering free games each month while granting access to expansive libraries filled with nostalgic gems and fresh releases. Sega stepping into this arena might not have been the apparent prediction for many of us, but why not take a shot? It’s like finding out your quiet neighbor is an amateur magician; surprising but potentially entertaining! Sega has quite the treasure chest full of classics dating back to its glory days in the ’90s. Titles sitting dormant in their library could bring life back into many special franchises through a well-structured service.
