Rumors Suggest Final Fantasy 9 Remake Faces Development Issues

Final Fantasy 9 Remake has been a hot topic for quite some time, but recent chatter suggests its development might be hitting some serious snags. A well-known leaker recently shared rumors that the project could even be at risk of cancellation, which would undoubtedly be a disappointment for fans eagerly awaiting a fresh take on this classic.

The info surfaced on Reddit’s GamingLeaksAndRumours, where user NatetheHate was asked about the remake’s status on ResetEra. According to him, the game is still technically in development, but he admits he needs to “do a fresh check” to confirm the current state. A month ago, he heard that the remake was “in trouble” and possibly even canceled, although only one source mentioned the cancellation, so further investigation is needed to confirm the information.

Fans have been waiting on this remake for ages, especially after Square Enix launched a dedicated website celebrating the 25th anniversary of Final Fantasy 9. The company also teased the game on social media recently with a quote from the original’s ending sequence. Given how the Final Fantasy 7 remake trilogy performed, a new remake makes sense both commercially and creatively; however, these rumors throw a wrench into expectations.

Meanwhile, other Final Fantasy news includes a producer hinting at a port of Final Fantasy 16 for the upcoming Switch 2 and reports that FF16 isn’t selling well on Xbox. Quite a mixed bag for the franchise at the moment, huh?
